What Your Tyre Load Index Numbers Really Mean
A tyre can look right, fit the wheel and still be the wrong choice for your vehicle. The tyre load index is one of the key numbers that prevents that happening. It tells you the maximum load each tyre is designed to carry under specified conditions, so it matters whether you drive a family SUV, a work ute, a 4WD loaded for a trip, or a light commercial vehicle.
What is a tyre load index?
The load index is the two or three-digit number printed on the tyre sidewall after the tyre size. For example, a tyre marked 225/65R17 102H has a load index of 102. The letter H is the speed rating, while 102 refers to load capacity.
That number is not a kilogram figure by itself. It matches a standard load chart. A higher number means the tyre can carry more weight. For instance, a load index of 91 is rated to carry up to 615 kg per tyre, 95 is 690 kg, and 102 is 850 kg. The four tyres together must have enough capacity for the vehicle’s weight, passengers, cargo and any fitted accessories.
It sounds simple, but the right rating is not based only on what you normally carry in the boot or tray. Your vehicle manufacturer has already considered axle loads, handling, braking and the way weight shifts during cornering and braking. That is why the tyre placard is the starting point.
Why the tyre load index matters
Tyres are the only part of your vehicle in constant contact with the road. If they are not rated to carry the load, they can run hotter, flex too much and wear faster. In a worst-case situation, an overloaded tyre can fail, especially in hot weather, at highway speeds or when the vehicle is carrying tools, towing gear or holiday luggage.
For everyday drivers, the consequences can be less obvious at first. The vehicle may feel less settled, braking can be affected and tyre shoulders may wear unevenly. On a ute, van or 4WD, a low load rating becomes a bigger issue when the tray is full, the canopy is packed, or a caravan is on the towbar.
There is also the fitment side. Replacement tyres should meet or exceed the load index specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Fitting a lower-rated tyre may be unsafe and can create insurance, roadworthiness or warranty concerns. If you are unsure, check the placard usually found inside the driver’s door opening, glovebox or fuel flap, then compare it with the markings on your current tyres.
Reading the sidewall without the confusion
A sidewall marking such as 265/65R17 112S gives several pieces of information. The 265 is the width in millimetres, 65 is the profile, R means radial construction and 17 is the wheel diameter in inches. The 112 is the load index, and S is the speed rating.
The load index is easy to miss because it sits beside the speed rating, but it should never be treated as an afterthought. A tyre of the same size can be available with different load ratings. Two tyres may both be 265/65R17, yet one may suit a standard SUV while another is built to handle the demands of a heavier 4WD setup.
Do not choose a tyre by size alone
Matching the size is only one part of getting a replacement tyre right. The load index, speed rating, construction and intended use all matter as well. This is particularly relevant for vehicles that have been modified or work harder than a standard commuter car.
A 4WD with a steel bullbar, winch, roof rack, drawers, fridge and recovery gear can carry considerably more weight than it did from the factory. A tradie’s ute may have a toolbox, ladder rack and equipment in the tray every day. Even a family SUV can be close to its limits when it is packed for a trip and towing a trailer.
In these cases, a higher load index may be appropriate, but higher is not automatically better in every situation. Heavier-duty tyres can have a firmer ride, more road noise or a different tread design. The best option is one that meets the vehicle requirements and suits how you actually use it.
Passenger, XL and light truck tyres
You may also see markings such as XL, which means Extra Load, or LT, which means Light Truck. These tyres are designed differently and can be suited to particular loads or tougher use. An XL tyre may offer additional carrying capacity in the same nominal size, while an LT tyre often has a stronger casing for demanding commercial, off-road or towing work.
That does not mean every vehicle needs an LT tyre. A light passenger car used mainly around Maitland or Rutherford will often ride and handle best on the tyre type specified by its manufacturer. Fitting a tougher tyre than necessary can be a trade-off rather than an upgrade.
Load index, tyre pressure and towing
Tyre pressure and load capacity are closely connected, but they are not interchangeable. The load index is a tyre design rating, while tyre pressure needs to be set for the vehicle and the load it is carrying. Adding more air than recommended does not turn a lower-rated tyre into a higher-rated tyre.
When towing or carrying a heavier load, use the tyre pressures listed by the vehicle manufacturer for that condition. Some vehicles have separate pressure recommendations for normal driving and fully loaded use. Check pressures when tyres are cold, ideally before you set off, rather than after a long drive.
Pay special attention to rear tyres when the vehicle is loaded or towing, and do not forget the spare. A spare with the wrong size, load rating or pressure can cause trouble when you need it most. For caravans, trailers and work trailers, their tyre load ratings must also suit the trailer’s actual axle loads.
Can you fit tyres with a higher load index?
In most cases, fitting a tyre with a higher load index than the placard requirement is acceptable, provided the tyre size, speed rating and other fitment details are suitable for your vehicle. It can make sense for a ute that regularly carries equipment or a 4WD set up for touring.
The reverse is not a safe shortcut. A lower load index may be cheaper or easier to find, but it reduces the tyre’s approved carrying capacity. It is not worth risking a blowout, accelerated wear or poor vehicle control to save a few dollars at the time of purchase.
If your vehicle has aftermarket wheels, suspension changes or larger tyres, ask for fitment advice before buying. The right answer depends on the vehicle’s legal requirements, clearances, wheel specifications and the maximum loads carried on each axle. Guesswork is where expensive tyre problems start.
When to check your tyre load rating
Check the rating whenever you replace tyres, buy a second-hand vehicle, prepare for a towing trip or add significant weight to the vehicle. It is also worth checking if you have repeated uneven wear, sidewall damage or tyres that look underinflated despite regular pressure checks.
For fleet vehicles and light trucks, load ratings should be part of routine tyre checks rather than a once-only purchase decision. Vehicles that run every day with tools, stock or deliveries put consistent strain on tyres. Choosing the correct rating helps control downtime and gets more predictable tyre life.
