Tyre Pressure for a Loaded Ute That Works
A tray full of tools, a pallet in the tub or a caravan on the towball changes how your ute carries itself. Getting the tyre pressure for loaded ute use right is not a small detail - it affects braking, steering, tyre wear and whether the vehicle feels planted or vague on the road.
There is no single pressure that suits every loaded ute. A dual-cab carrying a few bags of cement needs something different to a work ute with a permanent canopy, drawers and tools, or one towing a loaded trailer up the Hunter Expressway. The right starting point is always your vehicle’s tyre placard, then the actual load you carry.
Start with the tyre placard, not the tyre sidewall
Check the tyre placard, usually found inside the driver’s door opening, behind the fuel flap or in the owner’s manual. It lists the manufacturer’s recommended cold tyre pressures for normal driving and, on many utes, a higher setting for a full load or towing.
That placard is matched to the vehicle’s axle capacities, suspension, original tyre size and handling characteristics. It is more useful than a mate’s recommendation or a number found online. If your ute has different tyres or wheels from standard, the placard is still the best baseline, but it may be worth getting advice before making major changes.
The maximum pressure moulded into the tyre sidewall is not a recommended everyday setting. It is the maximum cold pressure the tyre can safely hold at its maximum rated load. Pumping every tyre to that figure can make an unloaded ute harsh, reduce grip over bumps and contribute to uneven wear.
Why a loaded ute usually needs more rear pressure
Most loads sit behind the cab, over or behind the rear axle. That puts extra weight onto the rear tyres, causing more sidewall flex if pressure is too low. A trailer can add even more load through towball weight, often at the worst possible point - behind the rear axle.
When rear pressure is too low for the load, the ute may feel soft or wander through bends. The rear tyres can run hotter, use more fuel and wear heavily on their outer shoulders. In a serious case, heat build-up can damage the tyre structure and raise the risk of failure.
Adding pressure within the tyre and vehicle limits helps the rear tyres carry the load properly. It also supports steadier steering and braking. That does not automatically mean the front tyres need the same increase. Front pressures should follow the placard unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise for the load or towing setup.
Load weight matters more than how full the tray looks
A ute can look lightly loaded and still be close to its limits. Steel toolboxes, a canopy, drawer system, roof racks, recovery gear and a second battery all add up before you throw in tools or supplies. A towing setup adds towball download, passengers and luggage as well.
Check your payload figure and gross vehicle mass, then pay attention to front and rear axle limits. Payload is not simply what fits in the tray. It includes everything added to the ute after it left the factory, including occupants and accessories. The rear axle is commonly the first limit approached on a working ute.
If you regularly carry heavy loads, a weighbridge visit is money well spent. Weigh the vehicle in typical work trim, then weigh it again with the load or trailer attached. It gives you a clear picture of whether your pressures, load placement and vehicle setup make sense.
Check pressures cold
Tyre pressures should be checked before driving, or after the ute has been parked for at least a few hours. This is called a cold pressure check. Driving creates heat and raises pressure, so a reading taken at the servo after a run is not a reliable number to set from.
Use a decent gauge rather than relying only on a service-station gauge. Check all four tyres, plus the spare before a trip or when it is due for a rotation. For a ute that works hard every day, a weekly check is sensible. For a family ute or weekend tow vehicle, check at least monthly and before loading up.
Temperature changes can alter readings too. A cool Hunter Valley morning and a hot afternoon are not the same thing, which is another reason to set pressures cold and inspect tyres regularly.
Towing changes the equation
Towing adds more than the trailer’s weight. Towball mass pushes down on the back of the ute and can unload the front axle, making steering and braking less confident. Correct rear pressure is part of a safe towing setup, but it cannot fix a badly loaded trailer or too much ball weight.
Keep heavier trailer items low and close to the trailer axle where practical. Make sure the trailer tyres are also inflated to their specified cold pressure and are rated for the load. A flat-looking trailer tyre is a problem, but so is a tyre that is only slightly underinflated while carrying a heavy load at highway speed.
If the ute squats heavily, porpoises over bumps or feels unsettled in crosswinds, stop and reassess. You may need to redistribute the load, reduce ball weight, confirm trailer loading or check whether the ute is within its legal limits. More air is not a cure-all.
Don’t use one pressure for every job
Many ute owners settle on a pressure that feels fine empty, then forget to adjust it before loading the tray. That is where problems start. A practical routine is to use the placard’s normal setting for everyday unladen driving, then move to its loaded or towing recommendation before carrying a substantial load.
If your placard gives only one recommendation, do not guess at a large increase. Check the owner’s manual, speak with the vehicle manufacturer or ask a tyre professional who can consider the tyre size, load rating and actual work the ute is doing. This is particularly important for utes fitted with all-terrain tyres, light-truck construction tyres or aftermarket wheels.
For off-road driving, pressures may be reduced for sand, rocks or rough tracks to improve traction and protect the vehicle. That is a separate situation from road driving. Once you are back on sealed roads, reinflate the tyres to an appropriate road pressure before travelling at speed or carrying a heavy load.
Read your tyres for early warning signs
Your tyres often show when the pressure is wrong. Wear on both outer shoulders can point to underinflation, while excess wear through the centre may indicate overinflation. Uneven wear can also come from wheel alignment, worn suspension parts, poor balancing or a load that is not sitting evenly.
Look for cuts, bulges, cracks, embedded screws and damage around the sidewalls, especially after work sites, gravel roads or off-road trips. A tyre that has been run low while loaded may have internal damage even if it reinflates and appears normal from the outside.
If the tyre pressure monitoring warning light comes on, do not ignore it or simply top up the tyre without checking why it dropped. Slow leaks from nails, valve issues or rim damage are common, and they are easier and cheaper to deal with before they become a roadside stop.
When to get a pressure and load check
Get the ute checked if you have recently added a canopy, drawers, suspension upgrade, larger tyres or a regular towing setup. The same applies if the steering feels different after loading, the rear tyres are wearing quickly, or you are unsure whether the load is within the ute’s capacity.
